Why I Tarot in the Morning

I grew up in a Christian household. My parents are very devout Orthodox Christians. My brother married a Catholic woman and they raise their children in that faith. My other brother married a woman who converted to Orthodoxy. And I married a Muslim.

But I draw tarot cards every day. And I pull from an oracle deck every week.

Don’t get nervous. And don’t start praying for my soul.

I do all of these things because it helps me process my thoughts and feelings. It helps me learn more about myself. And many times, the cards serve as journal prompts for me to delve into ideas and imaginings and daily events.

What the heck is Tarot?

Tarot cards, for those who are unfamiliar, are a deck of 78 cards, each with its own imagery, symbolism, and story. There are 22 Major cards and 56 minor cards. And the number of different card decks with different artwork on them is limitless. I’ve even some people who make their own.

But the tarot deck is much more that pretty pictures in the form of a card deck.

Tarot as a Guide

Healthline.com mentions that for many generations people turned to organized religion for guidance, for solace, for wisdom. Unfortunately, modern day practices and anxieties about the state of the world and how we fit into it are changing the way people relate to religion.

And one of those ways is by soul searching using tarot cards as a way to better understand ourselves.

Personal Experience

For me, pulling a tarot card a day helps me process.

I don’t believe it can tell me my future. I don’t believe it can influence actual events.

What I do believe is that it casts insight into things that might be happening in my life. It makes me focus on certain events or feelings that I might not be recognizing in the moment.

My son is getting ready to move out of the house. My daughter is getting ready to head out to grad school. My other son is leaving for university in Fall.

When I pulled a card that’s message was get rid of the old to make way for the new, I read it as a way to process the feelings of loss that I have that everyone is scattering again after our family time together. Sure, I’m sad. But I can also look forward to quality time with my youngest son and with my husband.

It was also a way for me to accept that getting rid of stuff that I had inherited from older family members might be a way to open myself up for better things.

There were so many different ways that that one card could be construed, so many ways that I applied it to my life.

Daily Journal Prompts

As biddytarot.com says, “Tarot is perfect for self-development, making choices, manifesting goals… Simply ask a question, pull a card, and dive into the imagery of the card to give you instant access to your inner wisdom and the answer you need.”

When I pull that card in the morning, I end up having realms of stuff to explore in my journal. Not all of it is personal, either.

Sometimes, the tarot card will give me an idea for a storyline or a plot twist. It will tie into my work as a writer in a concrete, imaginative way.

Sometimes, the tarot card will hold no meaning for me, at all. And even that is good for writing prompts in my journal.

It Works For Me

Basically, pulling tarot cards for me is fun and helps me process my thoughts, ideas, and emotions. It sparks topics and ideas for me to journal about. It helps me be a better person as I get to better know myself.

Could it work for you? Maybe.

If you are interested in tarot cards, do your research on line and see if you can use it to delve into your own thoughts, ideas, and feelings within a solitary practice or if you can use it in conjunction with conventional therapy.

Tarot cards are just one tool in your toolbox to help you, as Socrates said, Know thyself.
